Week 3 and 4

Neridah’s final weeks of the residency were super busy and balanced with a combination of dedicated studio development periods and continuing to access exhibitions and cultural spaces across Hangzhou to enrich her understanding of Chinese culture.

Neridah visited the historic Lingyin Temple, the Chinese Academy of Art Printmaking Triennial with Peter Wu (co-curator) and viewed a selection of the University collection of calligraphy and landscape paintings.

Neridah also visited with Peter at the Chinese Academy of Art Xiangshan Campus the Vitality and Elegance and International Print in the Post-Print exhibitions.

Peter Wu facilitated a meeting between Neridah and Mr Zheng, Director of the Yi Space Contemporary Art Centre in Hangzhou to discuss potential exhibition opportunities. Mr Zheng will curate a group exhibition in late November which will include a selection of Neridah’s collage drawings made during her residency at Jiangdi Art Park introducing her work to an international audience.

Neridah delivered an artist talk and overview of her practice and professional experience at the School of Arts Zhejiang Shuren University ‘Exploring the visual language of an artist’ which was attended by approx. 100 students and lecturers. Supported by a wonderful translator, Penny, this was a terrific opportunity for students and lecturers to gain insight into Neridah’s practice and to ask questions.

Jiangdi Art Park Director Mr Xu with Peter Wu facilitated a visit to the Hemudu Cultural Centre and archaeological site on Yuyao Country to look and learn about Neolithic culture that flourished in 5500 BC to 3300 BC.

Neridah spent the last days of her residency at Jiangdi Art Park in the studio working on collages and drawing in preparation for a studio visit by Mr Zheng from the Yi Space Contemporary Art Centre to consolidate the scheduled group exhibition titled ‘Living Art Projects’.

Before leaving China Neridah took advantage of visiting key institutions in Shanghai; Jing’an Temple, Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Propaganda Poster Art Centre, Yu Gardens and the 15th Shanghai Biennale ‘Does the flower hear the bee’ at the Power Museum of Art where Neridah attended curator and participating artist panel discussions.

Pearls returned home: Painting and Calligraphy from the Collection of Liangtuxuan by Ching Banlee Family and other permanent collections Ming and Qing Rhinoceros Horn Carvings, Jade and traditional furniture exhibitions at the Shanghai Museum were highlights for Neridah offering insight into Chinese culture and history.

Overall, Neridah had a very productive and fruitful visit to China and hopes to return in future for artist in residence and exhibition opportunities.
